When it comes to charging electric vehicles (Ev’s), it’s actually a lot easier than most people think. However, it is different from the refueling process we have been used to our whole lives and so people are naturally cautious. There is no need to be though, we’ll talk about mindset a little further about it but first of all, we’ll cover a few of the common questions we’re asked day-to-day in order to demonstrate the ease of keeping your electric Vehicle charging.
Can you charge an electric car from a normal plug?
Yes, you can charge your electric car from a normal household plug. While we always advocate the use of a dedicated charging point, you can simply plug your car into your regular wall socket and, with an adapter (usually provided by the manufacturer), your car will charge. Problems arise here with the efficiency of the charge and the time it takes, but it will charge. We’ve covered this in more detail in this blog on charging your electric vehicle at home. What is required for charging electric vehicles?
The equipment you need for EV Charging at your residence / apartment
- Dedicated charging point at your Parking
- Dedicated RCBO’s with protection as per ratings.
The charging point will be installed at a sensible location to suit your dedicated Parking slot – this might be in your Residence / Community/ Apartment or on the outside to suit the location that you park your vehicle. What is key here though is that you have dedicated off-street parking. A dedicated fuse board can be a safer way to run the power to your charging point – this does change depending on the current set up of your electrics and you will be advised before an installation takes place.
HOME CHARGING ( Mode 1)
Home charge points are basically used with a 230V/15A single phase plug that delivers up to 2.5kW of output power. Clearly, home charging is a type of (AC)Alternating Current charging. Amount of time taken to charge an EV depends on the rate of charging and the amount of charge required. Home charging can charge electric scooters in 2-3 hours, and electric cars in 6-7 hours.

In this mode the charging points are basically used with a 230V/32 A single phase plug that delivers up to 7kW of output power with which the charging time will decrease by an extent of 30% compared to normal 15A socket point. For every EV Vehicle the primary charging point will be Residence/ Apartment/community where People prefer Overnight charging.
